How Automated Fertigation is Critical for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA)

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) has revolutionized the way we grow crops by precisely controlling environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light, and nutrient delivery. One of the key components in maximizing yield and efficiency within CEA systems is automated fertigation.

In this blog post, we will explore the importance of automated fertigation in CEA and how, with its use, growers can optimize nutrient delivery, maximize yield, and increase profitability.

Understanding Fertigation

Fertigation is the process of injecting and mixing nutrients into water and delivering the nutrients to plants through an irrigation system. Traditionally, fertigation involved manual mixing and application of fertilizers, which is labor-intensive and prone to human error. However, with advancements in technology, automated fertigation systems have emerged as the best practice in modern agriculture.

The Role of Automation

Automated fertigation systems integrate dosing equipment, pumps, tanks, sensors, valves and controllers to deliver precise amounts of nutrients. These systems can be programmed to adjust nutrient concentrations, pH, and EC based on real-time data such as soil moisture, environmental parameters and plant growth stage. By automating the fertigation process, growers can ensure optimal nutrient uptake by plants, leading to improved growth, yield, and quality.

Benefits of Automated Fertigation in CEA:

Precision and Accuracy: Automated fertigation systems enable precise control over nutrient delivery, minimizing wastage and ensuring that plants receive the proper nutrients in the correct amounts at the right time.

Resource Efficiency:
By delivering nutrients directly to the root zone, automated fertigation systems reduce nutrient runoff and leaching, leading to more efficient use of fertilizers and water.

Time Savings:
Automation eliminates the need for manual mixing of nutrients batches and application of fertilizers, saving growers time and labor costs.

Optimized Growth Conditions: By integrating fertigation with other environmental control systems in CEA, such as climate control and lighting, growers can create ideal growing conditions for plants, maximizing growth rates and yield.

Data-Driven Decision Making: Automated fertigation systems can collect data on nutrient levels and environmental conditions, allowing growers to gain insight into plant health. This data analysis can then be used to make informed decisions and adjust fertigation schedules as needed to optimize crop performance.

Implementing Automated Fertigation

Implementing an automated fertigation system involves integrating various components, including sensors, control units, irrigation equipment, and software. These components can work together to monitor media moisture content, EC and pH levels, crop transpiration rates, and other vital parameters, allowing adjustment to fertigation schedules as needed. The success of these systems lies in their ability to adapt to the specific needs of different crops, making them versatile tools for a wide range of agricultural applications.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its numerous benefits, the adoption of automated fertigation in CEA faces challenges. The initial setup cost and complexity of these systems may be challenging for small-scale farmers. However, with ongoing advances in technology and increasing awareness of the importance of efficient agriculture practices, automated fertigation is becoming more accessible and affordable.  Fertigation equipment utilizing water powered piston injectors are electric free and often a more affordable option.

Educational and professional research in the field of agriculture continues to highlight the significance of automated fertigation systems in achieving the goals of CEA. As we move forward, it is essential to foster innovation and collaboration among researchers, farmers, and technology providers to overcome challenges and maximize the benefits of these systems for a greener, more sustainable world.

5 Benefits of Rolling Benches for Grow Facilities

As the demand for high-quality crops continues to increase, growers are constantly looking for ways to improve efficiency and maximize their yields. One solution that has become a best practice for cultivation facilities in recent years is the use of rolling benches. These innovative benches provide a range of benefits that can greatly enhance the productivity and profitability of any indoor cultivation operation. Let’s break down the advantage of rolling benches and explain why they have become essential equipment for modern growers.

1) Optimal Space Utilization

The primary advantage of rolling benches is their ability to optimize space utilization in a cultivation facility. Unlike traditional stationary benches, rolling benches are designed to be movable while stacked close together. This means that growers can easily arrange their layout to make the most efficient use of the available space. By replacing permanent aisles between plant rows with a single ‘floating’ aisle, rolling benches can significantly increase the number of plants that can be grown in a given area.

The ability to fit more benches into a single room makes it easier for workers to navigate through the facility, reducing time spent moving around the building. This allows growers to maximize yield potential and generate higher profits

2) Gain Vertical Space

In addition to maximizing the horizontal floor space, archive style rolling benches allow for double and triple tier grow levels within the same room. This maximizes the canopy against the high capitol cost of the building infrastructure. Producing double or triple the amount of crops in the same building footprint has become a popular advantage over traditional single tier benches.

3) Maximize Your Canopy

Rolling Benches allow the tops of the bench to be moved to the left or right, so the space between plants can be reduced or eliminated. When two benches are pushed apart from one another, an aisle is created with workspace for those benches.

Once work in that aisle is complete, the benches can be rolled to the side opening up the next aisleway. Rolling benches provide the maximum size canopy by eliminating redundant aisles.  Plant counts are significantly increased, and the facility yield is optimized by implementing rolling benches.

4) Raising the Canopy for Healthier Plants

An advantage shared by both rolling benches and stationary benches over growing on the ground comes from the drainage ability and increased air flow. When growing with pots on the ground, it can be difficult to collect and drain runoff from your irrigation events. This can lead to water pooling and root rot, both negatively impacting your harvests. Raising the plants on benches allows for the installation of drainage systems underneath the benches. Raising the plants also increases the under-canopy airflow, which can help to avoid plant health problems such as powdery mildew.

5) Flexibility and Adaptability

Lastly, rolling benches offer growers a high degree of flexibility and adaptability. Rolling benches are available in a variety of widths, usually from 4’ to 6’ wide. Different widths and lengths of benches can be used within the same room to truly maximize the available growing space. They can be cut to fit around beams and can fit in nearly any size or shaped room. This versatility is invaluable for growers looking to stay competitive in a rapidly changing industry.

Roll with the Best

Rolling benches offer a range of benefits that can significantly improve the efficiency and productivity of cultivation facilities. By optimizing space utilization, gaining vertical space, maximizing canopy, and raising the canopy to improve crop health, these innovative benches have become an essential tool for modern growers. By investing in rolling benches, growers can unlock their full potential and achieve greater success in indoor cultivation.

Understanding the Best Fertilizers for Cannabis Plants

Whether you're a seasoned grower or just starting your cultivation journey, understanding the importance of fertilizer selection is vital for achieving optimal plant health, maximizing yields, and operational success. With ever increasing competition for quality, staying ahead of the pack means as much as ever to consumers.  As fertigation specialists, we have seen firsthand how poor fertilizers and recipe cocktails can damage an entire system, leaving your facility and assets at risk. With an endless number of fertilizer brands on the market, they might start to look the same, sound the same, but we can assure you, they are not the same.

Why Choose the Right Fertilizer?

As experienced grower know, fertilizers play a pivotal role in providing the essential nutrients that cannabis plants need to thrive. These nutrients are classified into three main categories: macronutrients, micronutrients, and secondary nutrients. Each nutrient serves a specific purpose, influencing various aspects of plant growth, such as leaf development, root growth, and flowering.

Key Nutrients in the Best Cannabis Fertilizers:

  • Nitrogen (N): Nitrogen is crucial for promoting healthy foliage and stem growth, as well as enhancing chlorophyll production. However, excessive nitrogen levels can hinder flower development, so it's essential to find a balanced formula suitable for different stages of plant growth.
  • Phosphorus (P): Phosphorus is essential for root development, energy transfer, and flower formation. High phosphorus concentrations are especially beneficial during the flowering stage when cannabis plants require a significant boost in bud production.
  • Potassium (K): Potassium aids in overall plant health, improving disease resistance, water regulation, and nutrient absorption. Adequate potassium levels contribute to stronger stems, larger buds, and enhanced flowering.
  • Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg): These secondary macronutrients are critical for maintaining proper cell structure, enzyme activation, and regulating nutrient uptake. Calcium and magnesium deficiencies can lead to issues like leaf discoloration and stunted growth.
  • Silica: Silica is used to buffer irrigation water and stabilize to ideal pH. Silica additionally benefits plants growth, stem structure, stress reduction, water usage, and nutrient utilization.
  • Trace Minerals: In addition to the primary macronutrients, cannabis plants also require micronutrients such as iron, zinc, manganese, and copper. These trace minerals are needed in small quantities but are pivotal in various metabolic processes and enzyme functions.
