5 Mistakes to Watch Out for in Your Hydroponic System

Hydroponic growing is immensely popular among cannabis cultivators due to its ability to maximize yields and reduce growth time. However, even experienced cultivators can make mistakes that can negatively impact their plants' growth and overall health. Let’s discuss some common mistakes to watch out for in your hydroponic system. By being aware of these pitfalls, you can ensure a thriving crop and successful harvest.

1) Poor Nutrient Management

At Herb’s Supply, we know that one of the most critical aspects of hydroponic irrigation is maintaining a well-balanced nutrient solution. That starts with having a high-quality nutrient brand. Many cultivators make the mistake of either over or underfeeding their cannabis plants. Overfeeding can lead to nutrient burn, stunted growth, and even plant death. Conversely, underfeeding can result in nutrient deficiencies, weak plants, and lower yields. It is essential to properly mix your stock solutions and closely monitor the EC and pH levels to avoid such issues.

2) Incorrect pH Levels

Maintaining the correct pH level is vital for nutrient absorption in hydroponic systems. Cannabis plants thrive in slightly acidic conditions, with a recommended pH range between 5.5 and 6.5. Deviating from this range can hinder nutrient uptake and impede plant growth. Regularly testing and adjusting the pH of your nutrient solution is crucial to prevent pH-related problems, such as nutrient lockout and nutrient deficiencies. Incorporating an inline pH monitor to your fertigation piping system will ensure accurate control.

3) Over Feeding and Under Watering

It is critical to efficiently regulate your hydroponic irrigation schedule with a reliable controller.  Over feeding your plants can result in plant burn and root rot. Underwatering your plants will limit their growth. Program regular irrigation intervals, with breaks in between, to let the grow media dry out for a short period, promoting root growth. Using a slow drip irrigation will allow the plant to best absorb the hydroponic nutrients.

4) Inadequate Lighting

Proper lighting is paramount for cannabis cultivation, as it directly affects plant growth and development. Many cultivators make the mistake of using inadequate or incorrect lighting setups. Insufficient light intensity can cause stretched, weak plants with lower yields. On the other hand, excessive light can lead to heat stress and light burn. Understanding the lighting requirements of your cannabis plants and choosing the right type of grow lights is essential to ensure optimum growth.

5) Poor Air Circulation and Ventilation

A well-ventilated and properly circulated environment is crucial for a healthy hydroponic garden. Insufficient air circulation can result in high humidity, stagnant air, and increased risk of mold. Properly sizing and installing fans can help maintain optimal humidity levels and prevent issues like bud rot. Adequate air circulation also aids in strengthening plant stems and promoting better nutrient absorption.
